Q. Are the products safe?
A. Yes, Defunkify products are safe and we have data to prove it. We start with sustainable, plant based ingredients, minerals and synthetics from the EPA Safer Choice List. Our products DO NOT contain: phosphates, SLS, SLES, EDTA, Laureth-7, butyl, chlorine, ammonia, glycol ether, brighteners, dyes or other harsh chemicals. Then we take the extra step and test using state of the art tools to make sure our products are safe.
Q. Can I use Defunkify products on all my laundry?
A. We recommend it. ACTIVE WASH is great for sheets and towels. By removing the built up soap scum and body oils, sheets and towels feel softer and fluffier. ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD is great for clothes that don’t get washed as often, including jeans, down jackets and garments with durable water repellent coatings (DWR).
Q. I saw an article about deFUNKit. Is that still you?
A. Yes, we switched to our new name, Defunkify, in April along with new packaging to better embody our spirit of fun backed by science. Turns out graphic designers do packaging and graphics better than scientists! Who knew? Anyway, our packaging has improved, but we continue to offer the same great products inside. Our Permanent Odor Control product is now called Active Odor Shield Expedition, and our Shoe & Gear Deodorizer Spray is now called Active Spray. Both of these product names better reflect the active nature of the formulations.
Q. I have a favorite garment that has developed an odor that comes back when I first put it on. Does ACTIVE WASH help?
A. Yes, our scientists specifically formulated ACTIVE WASH to remove persistent odor and restore your garments to their as-new condition. If you have a garment where the persistent odor is really baked in, we recommend soaking it in the detergent-water mixture for at least 30 minutes to give the enzymes extra time to break down body oils that cause the odor. Just pause your washing machine after it fills (typically about 5 minutes) and before it rinses. Then, restart the machine after the soak. Longer soaking times do not hurt your garments. This process works just as well on front-loading washing machines as it does with top-loaders.
Q. Can ACTIVE WASH be used in any water temperature?
A. ACTIVE WASH is designed to work in either cold or warm water. However, for the best results, use warm water. It takes energy to wash clothes and there are only three sources in a washing machine: heat, mechanical (tumbling) and chemical. Since we don’t want to use a chemical mixture that is too strong, and we don’t want to beat delicate synthetic sportswear like a pair of old jeans, increasing the temperature to warm helps.
Q. Can I use ACTIVE WASH with fabric softener or dryer sheets?
A. Yes. However, most manufacturers of modern sportswear recommend against using fabric softeners and dryer sheets because they can negatively affect the wicking, breathability, water-resistance and other performance features of the fabric. (A few of us admit that at home we use about a third of a dryer sheet to reduce the static so we don’t go on a run with a sock stuck to our tights!)
Q. Does ACTIVE WASH remove blood, grass and mud stains?
A. ACTIVE WASH will remove most stains better than typical detergents. However, some stains may require a special purpose stain remover.
Q. Is ACTIVE WASH septic safe?
A. Yes. ACTIVE WASH is more efficient than other powder detergents, using only 0.7 oz per load. We don’t use fillers that were once common in powder detergents, including montorillonite clay, that can clog septic systems. We also don’t use phosphates, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium lauryl ester sulfate (SLES), or EDTA which can all negatively affect septic systems.
Q. Why do you use a powder, rather than a liquid detergent?
A. We prefer powder formulations. Liquid detergents are mostly water and therefore, they are heavier and cost more to ship for the same number of loads. That’s bad for your pocket book and the environment.
Q. Does ACTIVE WASH work in extremely hard water?
A. The performance of all laundry detergents decreases in very hard water. If you have very hard water (> 150 ppm) and think that it may be affecting your results, use two scoops of Active Wash. Note that washing machines are most effective with medium-sized loads, so avoid stuffing your washing machine like a college student.
Q. Is ACTIVE WASH a detergent or an additive?
A. ACTIVE WASH is simply a scientifically superior detergent that cleans more effectively. We recommend that you use it for all your laundry.
Q. Does ACTIVE WASH have any scent? I have very sensitive skin.
A. We use a very slight scent to mask the natural scent of the enzymes in the jar. This scent is not noticeable after washing.
Q. Are there any skin irritants in ACTIVE WASH?
A. We regularly consult with dermatologists who are experts in allergies and skin irritants. We use citric acid in our ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION, a naturally occurring compound found in orange juice, which in rare instances can be an irritant if not well rinsed. If you have any concerns, we recommend using a second rinse just to be safe.
Q. Does ACTIVE WASH contain Methylisothiazolinone (MI or BI)?
A. ACTIVE WASH does not contain Methylisothiazolinone or other -thiazolinone products. ACTIVE WASH also does not leave a residue and is designed to be allergy free.
Q. Do you have an ingredient list?
Yes, please contact us for MSDS.
Q. How long do the anti-odor properties last?
A. There are two answers. First, you can wear a garment multiple times before it becomes overpowered by the sweat, dirt and body oils and begins to smell. We have had guys on cross country ski training camps wear the same clothes for more than a week and they reported that they smelled significantly better than on previous trips. Typically, the runners in the office get two or three uses from running or yoga clothes before they choose to wash them. Second, with ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION STRENGTH, you can repeat this wear-wash cycle for up to 20 washes before the effect fades and you have to reapply, or about once per season.
Q. Can I skip a wash without my garment smelling?
A. Yes, this is the best part. ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION STRENGTH’S anti-odor properties will allow you to wear your garments multiple times without smelling. Skipping a wash occasionally will help extend the life of your favorite sportswear. And the best part, if you skip just two washes over the lifetime of your garment, EPA funded research showed that there is a net positive environmental benefit using ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION STRENGTH.
Q. Will ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION STRENGTH work on all clothes and linens?
A. Sure, you can use ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION on all synthetic and natural fabric types. The treatment is great for a variety of items beyond clothes, including towels and even sponges. We’ve had parents use it on kid’s sheets before they go off to college. The treatment will not change the texture of your fabric nor will it discolor colored fabrics, however, ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION STRENGTH may dull bright whites.
Q. How many garments can I treat with one package?
A. Our ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION STRENGTH kit can be used to treat a medium (not college-student) size load of laundry. This is about 15 – 18 items total, depending on how big they are (about 3 kg of dry fabric). Adding more clothes than this into the load may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
Q. What if I don’t treat the right amount of clothes?
A. A little more or less is fine. However, too many garments will reduce the effectiveness of both the ACTIVE WASH and the ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION STRENGTH treatment. If you’re treating a small amount of bright colors, we recommend adding a dish towel to absorb some of the treatment and help prevent dulling the colors. The cool thing is that dish towel won’t get mildewy smelling and you might want to treat all the rest of them.
Q. The care tag on my clothes says wash with cold water only. Can I use cold water instead of warm or hot?
A. Use lukewarm water if you’re concerned about the temperature harming your clothes. The main reason for recommending lukewarm water is that the ACTIVE ODOR SHIELD EXPEDITION STRENGTH powders dissolve better and get to work faster with warm water.
Q. I opened a packet but didn’t use it yet. Is it still OK to use?
A. Yes, but for best results use it within a few days of opening.
Q. The Step 3 packet didn’t open when I washed my clothes. What should I do?
A. Send us an email at info@Defunkify.com and we are happy to help. There can be a couple of reasons, that this will happen. Sometimes, the bag will get caught up in a large garment and not get adequately tumbled to break the seal early enough in the cycle to empty completely. including the water currents within your washer. This is very rare and once we understand the issue we can make sure there is a solution that works.
Q. How much do I need to spray to get the long-lasting effects?
A. We recommend getting the item thoroughly wet with the spray. A four-ounce bottle of spray should treat about eight pairs of shoes. It is important that the spray get anywhere that sweat can soak into, including below the shoe insole and into the toe. Let the item dry before use. (Because dry socks feel better!)
Q. The peppermint smell went away. Will the spray still work or do I need to reapply?
A. The spray is continuing to work even after the masking agent – the essential oil blend – goes away. The peppermint and other essential oils are designed to provide immediate relief while the odor-fighting molecules target the source of the odor and keep it from coming back. This is all to say, reapply when the odor comes back and not when the peppermint scent goes away.
Q. How long will the spray last?
A. This really depends on use and how frequently the item gets rinsed (intentionally or unintentionally). In most instances, the spray will last for several weeks or longer, however, soccer boots in wet Oregon might need to be re-treated every week or two.
Q. Will the spray work on wetsuits?
A. Yes. The spray will work on wetsuits, however it may not last as long as it would on a pair of shoes.
Q. Will the spray cause damage or stain any materials?
A. No, with typical use, it will not impact the performance of the material or cause damage. We do not recommend using the spray on DWR because of the essential oils.
Q. Will ACTIVE SPRAY stain bright whites?
A. No. ACTIVE SPRAY is a water-based formula that will not discolor fabrics. ACTIVE SPRAY is not a stain remover and does not remove armpit or sweat stains, but will eliminate the odors that result from the sources of these stains.
Q. Do you offer an unscented version of the spray for hunters?
A. Not currently. If this is a product you are interested in, send us an email info@Defunkify.com.
Q. Do you ship products overseas?
A. We currently only sell and ship products in the United States and Mexico.
Q. I’m interested in carrying your product in my store. How do I get a price sheet and order information?
A. That’s great! Send us an email – info@Defunkify.com – and be sure to include the name of your store along with a phone number and we will be in touch.
Q. Do you ever sponsor athletes or events?
A. We occasionally will sponsor specific events or athletes who embody the Defunkify spirit. We are always looking for people pushing the boundaries and doing amazing things, and who are interested in sharing the Defunkify story. Email us today with more information about your opportunity.
Q. Do you test on animals?
A. We respect the fact that many people don’t want consumer products to be tested on mice, rabbits, monkeys, dogs or other mammals, and we agree. We do ensure that our products are as safe as possible for people, animals, and the environment by rigorously testing our formulations throughout design and development. We do this using state of the art diagnostic tools developed by researchers at the University of Oregon based on a well established biological model organism, the nematode C-elegans. This microscopic worm is a well established model organism and a good predictor of toxicity in mammals, including humans and is also a widely recognized model for studying soil and water toxicity and thus a good indicator of a product’s effect on the environment. This state-of-the-art testing represents a big step forward in understanding the true safety level of cleaning products without harming mammals.
Q. What is your testing protocol for stain samples?
A. All samples, other than the unwashed control, were washed with a front loading washing machine using the equivalent of a medium load of laundry (2 kilograms) on a heavy wash cycle. All samples are ASTM standardized and come from a scientific supply company.
Q. Is your packaging recyclable?
A. We use recyclable and reusable packaging wherever possible. All of our bottles and scoops are recyclable. We continue to work with our packaging vendors to find sustainable options that reduce costs, shipping and ultimately the amount of material in our landfills. The cannisters also make great organizers in the shop.
